The German Spitz (Mittel) is cousin to the Keeshond and the Pomerainian.
While the afformentioned varieties are certainly wonderful in their own unique way, we believe the Spitz Mittel combines all their best attributes into one very beautiful breed of dog.
The German Spitz is bright, confident and lively with a adventurous spirit, they may be small in size but they are a very intelligent breed and needs plenty to keep their mind occupied.
The Spitz have a playful nature of the Pomeranian, while having a very affectionate nature most noticeable in the Keeshound and in other Spitz breeds.
The Spitz Mittel is of sound, even temperament and are ideal as pets for families with children, or single people of any age, wanting an enthusiastic and affectionate companion.

Regular grooming is important (once weekly) with a good pin brush to ensure that coats are maintained and clean to keep the dog free from nasties that may find their way onto your dog's coat.
The German Spitz have a double coat which consists of a soft undercoat with a long harsh textured top coat. A German Spitz should never be clipped as it will cause them to lose it's insulating properties.

Spitz dogs come in a variety of wonderful and exhuberant colours, ranging from snow white, creams through to black and tan, wolf sable, parti-colours, blues, dark chocolate browns and black.

While pure white dogs and mixed colours tend to hold their colouring throughout their life, pure black dogs do tend to develop tints of chocolate if they spend a lot of time outdoors in hot weather.
The two most popular sizes in the German Spitz are the Klein and the Mittel. The Klein is the smaller version of the German Spitz, measuring 9 ins - 11.5 ins (23 - 29 cms) high, while the Mittels are 12 ins - 15 ins ( 30 -38 cms) high.
The German Spitz are a gentle, playful and affectionate breed, possessing a noticably intelligent disposition and are responsive to obedience training.

Spitz are a medium-active dog, meaning that they enjoy activity such as regular play or excercise.
Given sufficient room to move around in, the dogs will play games and be active when they need to, so their basic excercise requirements will be met without guidance from their owner.

They will of course love interaction with you and your family, so any extra playtime or walking you can do with them, will be appreciated by the Spitz.
They are not inherently mischevious breed, but as with small children, they may get into mischief, given the opportunity.
